Yoga Sadhana

"Sadhana is derived from the Sanskrit root 'sadh', which means 'to accomplish' or 'to succeed'. Refer to the power of a Sadhana to transform and bring one to fulfillment - line the path up a mountain towards the peak or even down the mountain into the world."

A 30-day living Yoga Sadhana is part of the Teacher Training with Shiva Rea and the Samudra global school of living Yoga and this page is dedicated to my experience.

There are six different Sadhanas to chose from depending on your need.

  • Creative
  • Hatha (Sun/Moon)
  • Bhakti (Love)
  • Shanti (Peaceful)
  • Vira (Warrior)
  • Health-Regeneration

I chose the Creative Sadhana (Cultivating your Inherent Creative Flow) due to feeling like i needed to nourish and feed the creative side of my soul.

The Aim: Liberating inherent creativity, enhancing life-energy and manifesting potential.

For a cycle of 30 days I rose early for a morning puja with the practice of Japa Mala while honoring the deities I had chosen to invoke during this time and finishing off with the flow of creative writing. From here it was time to roll out the mat, in the beginning it was hard to step outside the box for a "creative" morning practice but by the 4th morning I felt a shift in my energy and this was my main motivation to begin my day! My creative morning practice consisted of choosing my favourite song of the morning, closing my eyes either standing, sitting or laying down and to surrender to the movements of my body. Some days this creative flow would be slow and introverted, some days it would be full of fire and ignited with a passion for arm balances. Constantly moving, breathing and trusting the creative pulse which kept me spontaneous. My evening practice would be shorter but just as impulsive and free, if I didn't feel like practicing, I wouldn't, sometimes this creative energy would be channeled into making a feast for friends or a rejuvenating fresh juice.

During this time I also started to connect again with making jewelery and "Catchers" - Similar to Dream Catchers, but these were individual, from Love Catchers, Fertility Catchers, Angel Catchers, Protection Catchers etc. It gave me so much joy and happiness to be making things again out of beads and wire! I gave most of the away to friends and family.

With this Sadhana a light also began to shine toward another passion of mine which is to fuse Yoga and Dance together. I was attending regular 5 Rhythms classes and during this time I found myself choreographing a Yoga/ Dance sequence on the dance floor surrounded by the rhythms of Flow, Staccato, Lyrical, Stillness and Chaos. This was extremely empowering! Once the sequence felt complete and the Sadhana finished I taught a Dancing Through Yoga Workshop during the Brighton Fringe Festival.

Over all my experience of the Creative Living Yoga Sadhana was truly a blessings, I connected again with the creative spark within and was able to feed this flame with juice from my own centre of creativity which had been dry and lifeless from being 'too busy' and caught up in the outside world.

Later I found out that the person I gave the Fertility Catcher to became pregnant and a close Yogi friend who received the Love Catcher is now in a loving long term relationship!
